6 Outdoor Communities Focused on Inclusivity We Love

6 Outdoor Communities Focused on Inclusivity We Love
We believe the outdoors is meant to be safe, welcoming, accessible and inclusive for everyone. Day after day we see incredible people building communities and organizations that are paving the way for everybody to access and enjoy outdoor spaces and activities.

We wanted to highlight a few outdoor communities we recognize that are nurturing and fostering space for LGBTQIA+ community members to get outdoors!

1. Unlikely Hikers

Unlikely Hikers is for adventurers who are plus-size & fat, BlPOC, queer, trans and non-binary, disabled, neurodivergent, and beyond. They build community at the intersections of these identities, creating a more inclusive outdoors.

With the ethos of "Nature is infinitely diverse and so are we. We ARE nature." We love and support the efforts of creating a space that is a diverse, anti-racist, body-liberating outdoor community featuring the underrepresented outdoorsperson.

2. OUT TRAILS

OUT TRAILS is a community of LGBTQ+ and ally trail runners/hikers, celebrating & promoting diversity out on trails who believe outdoor spaces are for everyone to find community and to enjoy.

OUT TRAILS hosts an LGBTQIA+ running retreat as well as weekly group runs in key locations.

3. The Venture Out Project

The Venture Out Project (TVOP) leads backpacking and wilderness trips for the queer and transgender community. TVOP envisions a world where queer, trans, and LGBTQ+ youth and adults can create community, develop leadership skills, and gain confidence through the shared experience of outdoor adventure and physical activity.

The Venture Out Project provides gear for participants who may need it, a sliding scale for payment to make the trips as inexpensive as possible to serve as many people as possible, and scholarships for the trips to improve access.

4. Diversify Outdoors

A coalition of outdoor social media influencers including a multitude of activists, athletes, bloggers, and entrepreneurs, Diversify Outdoors works to promote BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other marginalized voices in outdoor spaces to create a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable community. Founded by Danielle Williams of Melanin Base Camp, their work takes many different forms, like creating a jobs board to make opportunities more accessible and hosting events. Allies are also welcome to join.

5. Van Life Pride

Van Life Pride Founded by Natalie and Abigail Rodriguez, is a digital community that celebrates queer nomads. The page aims to be not only LGBTQIA+ inclusive, creating a safe place for this spread-out community to connect with each other and allies, but also for different types of transit, from van life to buses to boats and more.

6. Radical Adventure Riders

Radical Adventure Riders (RAR) was founded in 2017 and centers on gender inclusivity and racial equity in cycling and the outdoors. RAR does this by providing education, connection, resources, and support for the community and industry through its 10 RAR Chapters across the U.S. in Georgia, California, New York, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico. They are aiming to grow their chapters to 20 across the nation!
