Plastic options seem to be everywhere nowadays - and most of the time, they're the most convenient. But plastic is taking up a huge spot in our landfills (especially, single-use plastic), so it's time to find some alternatives.
Reusable Produce Bags
Plastic produce bags are one of the many plastic items we use without even thinking about it. But what happens to them right after you unload your fruit into the fridge? They go right in the trash. Instead check out brands, like Eco-Bags, that make reusable options. They come in lots of different materials, and they'll last a long time. All you have to do is remember to bring them with you!
Recyclable K-Cup Pods
It's so awesome to have a single-serve coffee machine that whips it up in minutes. But it's not so awesome for the environment. There are a few brands that make recyclable cups, like Green Mountain and Laughing Man. All you have to do is peel the top off, empty out the leftovers, and throw it right in your recycle bin. But if you're super loyal to your brand of coffee, check out Keurig's reusable cup option. You load the coffee in, make it, wash it, and reuse it.
Silicone Straws
We've said it before, but we'll say it again. Skipping the straw is something we should all try to do to cut down on the 500 million that are used daily. A silicone straw is reusable, dishwashable and a good option for people with disabilities. Plus, it's recyclable, so if you decide you're done with it, you can feel good about getting rid of it.
Bamboo Toothbrush
Just like straws, plastic toothbrushes are being found in the ocean - somewhere they really shouldn't be. A good alternative for this is a bamboo brush. Bamboo grows quickly, is antibacterial by nature, and is biodegradable, so it won't sit in a landfill forever. There are quite a few brands that are making these, but one is Brush with Bamboo. Their toothbrushes are 100% plant-based, including the bristles!
Reusable Water Bottle
A million single-use plastic water bottles are used every minute. And at least 90% of those end up in the trash. Instead, invest in a reusable water bottle. They're a lot more durable, and certain ones will keep your water cold all day long. Plus, you can decorate them with fun stickers. Check out the bottles from Hydro Flask, or any other brand you like.
Compostable Trash Bags
A great way to reduce your carbon footprint is by using compostable trash bags instead of those plastic ones. Companies, like UNNI, are making bags that are a lot better for the environment (and half the price of the Glad bags you buy at the store). Sometimes it saves to be eco-friendly!
Bottle-less Shampoo & Conditioner
What?! I know, this is awesome! LUSH has started making shampoo and conditioner bars that you rub directly into your hair. That means two less plastic bottles you have to throw away when you need to replace them. Plus, they come in so many different flavors, and they look so good, I'm going to need one of each!
Glass Food Containers
Ziploc baggies are the worst. So for now on, when you pack your own lunch or put away leftovers, use these Pyrex glass food containers. They rock! They're durable, come in all different sizes and are dishwasher-safe.
We use plastic everyday, and truthfully, it's going to be that way for a while. But there are little changes we can make to start chipping away at that huge mound of plastic in your trash can every week.
